The Meat Industry Trust (MIT) invites South African students to apply for the Postgraduate Bursary Programme for the 2025 academic year. This bursary is aimed at enhancing the South African red meat industry through scientific research related to red meat species such as cattle, sheep, or goats.
The bursary supports research that contributes to the improvement of production, processing, marketing, or welfare of red meat and red meat products.

Eligible Fields of Study:
The bursary is available for Master’s or Doctorate degrees in the following areas:
- Consumer, Economics, and Marketing
- Environment, Climate, and Carbon Footprint
- Genetics, Genomics, and Breeding
- Health, Disease Control, Pharmacology, Toxicology, Bio-security, and Welfare
- Hygiene, Product Safety and Quality, Food Safety
- Livestock Nutrition
- Meat Science, Nutritional Value
- Physiology, Growth, Reproduction
- Production Systems, Efficiency, Management
- Rangeland, Pasture, Forages, Water
- Socio-economic Aspects of the Red Meat Industry
- Transition Agriculture in Livestock Production
- Waste Management & Utilization
Bursary Details:
- Value: R60,000 per annum, paid in two instalments to the recipient’s institution.
- Master’s Degree Funding: R120,000 over two consecutive years.
- Doctorate Degree Funding: R180,000 over three consecutive years.
- Bursary renewal is based on satisfactory academic progress and re-registration each year.
- Recipients must submit annual progress reports and a final report upon completion of their studies.
Eligibility Criteria:
To qualify, applicants must meet the following requirements:
- Be a South African citizen.
- Meet the requirements for registering for a Master’s or Doctorate degree in 2025.
- Plan to study full-time in one of the eligible fields listed above.
- Master’s applicants: Must have completed a BSc Hons or BSc (Agric) or an equivalent qualification recognized by SAQA or SACNASP/SAVC.
- Doctorate applicants: Must have completed a Master’s degree registered with SAQA or equivalent.
- Study at a recognized South African institution.
- Be unemployed.
- Agree to the terms and conditions of the bursary.
- Candidates with other bursaries must declare all funding received.
