The South African Association for Food Science and Technology (SAAFoST) Foundation invites learners interested in Food Science and Technology to apply for its bursary programme for the 2025 academic year.
This bursary is awarded based on academic merit, employment equity, and potential. Successful applicants will receive financial assistance to pursue full-time undergraduate studies in Food Science and Technology at a South African tertiary institution.

Eligibility Criteria:
- Academic Excellence: Preference for matriculants with excellent academic performance or demonstrated potential.
- Minimum Admission Requirements:
- FETC (G) with at least 60-69% (Achievement Rating of 5) in Mathematics and Physical Science.
- Life Science is recommended.
- Course Enrolment: Must be enrolled full-time in an undergraduate degree or diploma in Food Science and Technology.
- Citizenship: Must be a South African citizen, resident for at least 3 years prior to application.
- Bursary Duration:
- Undergraduate Degree (up to BSc Hons) – 4 years
- B. Tech Degree – 5 years
- Diploma – 4 years
- Personal Statement: Applicants must provide a 1-page personal statement outlining how their education will positively impact their lives and the scientific community.
- Reference Letter: Must include a reference letter from someone who has known the applicant in a learning capacity for at least 3 years.
Bursary Package:
- Tuition Fees: Covers actual tuition fees up to R40,000 per annum, paid directly to the tertiary institution in two instalments.
- Performance: The second instalment depends on satisfactory results from the first semester.
Bursary Conditions:
- SAAFoST Membership: Recipients must register as SAAFoST members within three months of registering at the tertiary institution and remain active members for the duration of their studies.
- Reporting: A six-monthly report and exam results, including participation in SAAFoST activities, must be submitted to the SAAFoST Foundation.
- Completion Period: Recipients must complete their studies within the prescribed period. Any interruptions or course changes without permission may lead to the bursary being converted into a loan.
