Position Purpose:
The Trainee Train Assistant will undergo both theoretical and practical training to become a qualified and certified Train Assistant. Responsibilities include:
- Completing required modules in the Train Assistant-Initial Course.
- Gaining competency to perform tasks in an operational environment.
- Operating equipment as assigned.
- Keeping comprehensive training records for future progression.
- Safely executing tasks in line with the company’s strategies and vision.

Position Outputs:
- Complete a theoretical training programme within the required time frame.
- Develop practical competencies in operational settings.
- Maintain a portfolio of evidence of all training experiences.
- Perform trainee duties under the supervision of Transnet Freight Rail (TFR).
Qualifications and Experience:
- Grade 12 with Pure Mathematics and/or Physical Science.
- Willingness to undergo both theoretical and practical training to qualify as a Train Assistant.
- Be at least 21 years old (in line with safety regulations).
Other Requirements:
- Must be 1.6 meters tall (minimum height).
- Pass psychomotor ability assessments through the Vienna Testing System (VTS).
- Capable of carrying heavy objects and meet the inherent health requirements of the job.
- Undergo medical surveillance and safety behavioral risk assessments every 12 months.
Competencies:
- Knowledge of various communication systems, depot layout, and locomotive classes.
- Familiarity with the Health and Safety Act, BCEA, and other TFR policies.
- Ability to handle stress, manage time efficiently, and be safety-conscious.
- Must be willing to work shifts and handle results-oriented tasks.
